Created by locals over a decade ago, the Adirondack Rail Trail Association (ARTA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that partners with NYS DEC for trail maintenance and amenities, and represents and promotes the business and municipal interests along the 34-mile Adirondack Rail Trail.
Empowering communities, preserving nature, and fostering unforgettable experiences, the Adirondack Rail Trail Association is committed to serving as stewards and ambassadors, dedicated to nurturing a vibrant, interconnected Adirondack Rail Trail at the heart of the Adirondacks.
At the Adirondack Rail Trail Association, we envision an accessible, multi-use trail that offers a breathtaking journey through picturesque landscapes and charming towns. A place where locals and visitors alike can come together, embrace the great outdoors, and forge lasting memories.
As a nonprofit organization, we partner closely with municipalities, local businesses, and the Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) to ensure the trail’s ongoing monitoring and maintenance, support community safety, and encourage economic growth. We believe in the power of community involvement and are actively recruiting volunteers to join us in nurturing growth and community development along the trail.
The trail is located in the Adirondack Park which is a mix of private land, and Forest Preserve that is protected by the State Constitution. The Adirondack Forest Preserve was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963.
From the stunning mountain vistas of Lake Placid to the vibrant streets of Saranac Lake and the serene shores of Tupper Lake, the Adirondack Rail Trail promises an array of scenic wonders, historical sites, and opportunities to engage with local businesses and culture.
